Party Animals is a fantastic new party game that recently took over Twitch. Streamers worldwide shared their impressions of the game as they attempted to beat each other up in the cute physics-based brawler. Since the game isn't out at the time of writing, we don't know all the details about it, but it's likely that there will be Party Animals crossplay. Below we've outlined everything we know for sure about cross-platform multiplayer in Party Animals.
Party Animals is set to launch for PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The developer, Recreate Games, has confirmed this. There will likely be some form of crossplay between PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Whether the console versions are compatible with the PC version will depend on how the developers manage multiplayer servers.
What is Crossplay?
When a game supports crossplay, players on one platform can play with or against those on other platforms. For example, when players in Rocket League play a match from their PC against someone on Nintendo Switch, they utilize crossplay.
Using Rocket League as an example, the game has fully integrated crossplay functionality. Players on any given platform can interact with others on any of the other supported platforms. While there are restrictions on certain aspects, such as custom maps, the base game is open for everyone to play together.
It's likely that the Party Animals crossplay functionality will be very similar to this. The game is designed for many short matches to be played one after the other. To keep up a fast combat flow, it would make sense to allow all players to fight against anyone, regardless of platform.
Party Animals Crossplay Between Different Platforms
While it would be great for Party Animals to allow everyone to play together, there's a chance that it may not be possible at launch. Even Rocket League has only recently seen full crossplay implemented across all platforms.
One limitation that I think we can expect is between PC and PlayStation 4. As we mentioned in our guide for Genshin Impact, players on PlayStation 4 can't play with those on PC. Unfortunately, this can be due to several reasons.
I think it would be safer to expect Party Animals to launch with limited crossplay. For example, players on Xbox and PC will be able to play together, but everyone else is limited to their platform only. Then, slowly over time, I think the developers will roll out crossplay functionality with more platforms. Eventually, a game like Party Animals could be hugely successful with full crossplay, so it only makes sense that the developer would strive for it.
Party Animals Release Date
At the time of writing, we have no confirmed release date for Party Animals. It is possible to wishlist the game on Steam though, which you can do here. It's set for a launch at some point in 2020, which means there are only a couple of months left for the game to release. The developer may be waiting for next-gen consoles to come out so that they can get Party Animals on those systems as well. If that's the case, then this could be the only party game available on next-gen consoles in the same year as they launch.
Once we have a release date, the developer should tell us more about crossplay and which platforms will get the game first.
That's everything there is to know about crossplay in Party Animals. As soon as we learn more, we will update this article with all the facts regarding crossplay, including release dates.
