It's official, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is the name of 2020's entry to the franchise. Here we're going to cover everything there is to know about the game, from trailers, to in-depth interviews.
We'll be updating this article between now and when the game launches. Each new piece of information will appear underneath this paragraph, with the original article at the bottom. Be sure to check back as soon as you see anything in the news, because we'll be covering it here.
Black Ops Cold War Release Date
The next Call of Duty game is said to be releasing on November 13. This will probably only be for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC though. Since we don't have a release date for the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X, we don't know when next-gen versions of the game will release. If they launch after the game though, there's a good chance that Black Ops Cold War will be a launch title for both.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Trailer
The trailer for Black Ops Cold War has finally been released. It shows off what appears to be a reworked version of the original Black Ops' story, or a sequel. It also contains a small section of multiplayer footage, but we'll get to that.
Is Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War a Black Ops Remake?
The story of Black Ops Cold War appears to star the same characters as the original Black Ops. In fact, the game is a direct sequel to that first entry in the Black Ops series.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Campaign
The first Black Ops game tells the story of Alex Mason, an American soldier who is brainwashed, but not to do what you'd think. Black Ops 2 picks up many years later, and is set in the near future.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is set in 1981, after that first Black Ops game, but before the second. We can see some familiar faces in the trailer. There's Frank Woods, the brainwashed Alex Mason, and Jason Hudson, who interrogates Mason in the first game.
The game story looks to focus on a notorious, yet never identified, Soviet spy codenamed Perseus. This agent is said to have stolen nuclear secrets from the Manhattan Project in 1943. They are considered to be the single largest threat to the free world at the time, which is why Woods and Mason are being tasked with taking them down.
What Time Period is Cold War Based on?
Everything about Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is based in the 1980s. However, in the trailer we see two time periods coming together. The first is 1981, which counts for the game's 'modern day' setting.
The secondary setting seems to be some point in the Vietnam War. The first Black Ops game covered 1961 to 1968, and included some scenes from the Vietnam War. We can therefore assume that the Vietnam War segments of the new game will take place between these dates.
We should expect the story to twist and turn in unexpected ways. The original Black Ops had a brilliant twist at the end that no one saw coming, and acted as a fantastic final crescendo. Hopefully this latest game has something similar.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Multiplayer
Right at the end of the game's reveal trailer, we get a glimpse at some sort of multiplayer. This appears to be set in a wide open map, much like Call of Duty: Warzone. Whilst the game will probably have other multiplayer modes, it has been publicised that Call of Duty: Warzone will be updated in order to run alongside it.
Anyone who pre-orders a digital version of the game will be invited to the open beta of the multiplayer mode. This is a fantastic chance for anyone to try the game out before it launches, but it does come at the cost of buying it early.
How Does Call of Duty: Warzone Connect With Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War?
Call of Duty: Warzone will be transitioning with season 6 to take on a new theme for Black Ops Cold War. No one knows exactly what this will look like, but the end of the Black Ops Cold War reveal trailer does give us some indication.
It's likely that the game will grow to feature new modes and maps. The battle passes will also probably switch to allow players to earn cosmetics based on the latest game. While we don't have all the information on this just yet, we do know one new mode that's on the way.
Call of Duty: Warzone Zombies
Dataminers have uncovered files in Call of Duty: Warzone for a Zombies Royale mode. The new game mode will see players turn into zombies once they die. However, those players can consume another fallen player's heart in order to become human once again.
The Black Ops series has always had the best zombies game modes. In fact it was the game that preceded Black Ops, World at War, that saw the mode first introduced to the franchise.
It would make sense that Warzone would adapt to include this new mode when the series that it is synonymous with makes its triumphant return. With that said, these files aren't concrete confirmation. For that, we'll have to wait for an official reveal.
If the game mode is added, then this could be how Activision keeps Warzone relevant for years to come. If the game is updated with every new major Call of Duty release, it will never stop being relevant. Call of Duty fans may not even need to buy the annual release if they only want to play Warzone and earn new cosmetics. This could be the future of Call of Duty multilayer as we know it.
Call of Duty: Warzone Zombies Release Date
Nobody knows when this will be, but we can use logic to make an educated guess. The next season in Call of Duty: Warzone, providing it sticks to the usual timings, will be October 5.
As we've mentioned, Warzone Season 6 should see a transition from Modern Warfare to Black Ops Cold War. As long as this is the case, we should also see this new zombies mode appear in the game at some point during the season. Black Ops Cold War launches on November 13, so it would make sense for the new mode to launch alongside it. On the other hand, that might draw players away from the new entry in the series, which isn't what Activision wants.
Activision is a smart company though, and they know how to market their games. I'd say that we'll be seeing this Zombies Royale mode from day one of Season 6. That's because Activision will want to build anticipation for their next major release. What better way to do that than show players what they can get their hands on in a free-to-play entry?
Call of Duty: Warzone Zombies Game Modes
A few different game modes for Call of Duty Zombies have evolved over the years. In Warzone, I think that things will probably be quite stripped back. We should expect to only see Zombies Royale. There could be more Zombies game modes in the full release of Black Ops Cold War, but we won't know until Activision tells us.
