The battle of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 vs Cold War is over before it began. Black Ops Cold War is the better game. However, Black Ops 4 is not without its charm, or appeal to those purely interested in multiplayer games.
In this article we’re going to examine exactly what each of these games offers to players. Then we’ll summarise why Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is better.
Black ops 4 | Cold war | |
Campaign based on | No campaign | 1960-1980 |
Zombie mode | Yes | Yes, but in Warzone |
Weapons/tech | Futuristic to the point of fantasy | Real weapons used in the time period |

Everything You Can do in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

When Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was announced, the world knew that it would be a very different Call of Duty game. In fact, it turned out to be one of the most individual entries in the franchise. The reason for that, is that is has absolutely no single player campaign mode.
That’s right, Black Ops 4 was designed from the ground up to be a multiplayer-only game. That’s because the previous entry, Black Ops 3, was one of the most popular Call of Duty games to date, and all people wanted to play was the multiplayer mode.
Black Ops 4 delivered three different multiplayer game modes. These included the traditional form of multiplayer with various match types, a zombies mode, and a brand new mode called Blackout.
In standard multiplayer, anyone could jump into a game of deathmatch, king of the hill, or any of the other traditional Call of Duty game modes. Zombies mode was exactly what’s you’d expect it to be today, a wave based survivial game mode.
Blackout was different through. This was Call of Duty’s first entry into the battle royale scene, and it was good. The mode certainly isn’t without its faults, but for a first attempt, it captured the community’s attention, keeping servers full until the next release in the series.
Everything you can do in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War

We’ve just seen the official reveal trailer for Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War. We also know about every mode that’s in the game already. Spoiler alert, it’s more than there is in Black Ops 4. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, this will make the battle of Black Ops 4 vs Cold War very one-sided.
Black Ops Cold War offers a campaign mode, and multiplayer. However, it’s also blending in with Call of Duty: Warzone. This means that the game packs in that same battle royale experience. To top things off, Warzone is getting a zombies mode, so really everything is on the table.
The campaign for Black Ops Cold War is a direct continuation of the one in the original Black Ops. It’s a hardcore solo campaign, and if it’s anything like the original’s, it’ll blow our minds.
The game is also going to feature the traditional multiplayer mode. This will see all of those fan favourite modes return, without the bloat that comes with battle royale.
Now onto Warzone. This is tricky, because it’s technically a separate game. Activision has confirmed that Warzone will transition to focus on Black Ops Cold War. This means that all the cosmetics and themes for the game will be based on Black Ops Cold War for the next year.
Finally, we have the brand new Warzone zombies mode. This mode hasn’t been fully revealed at the time of writing. But what we know is that it will see players become zombies upon death. There will then be a mechanic that brings them back to life, should they eat another fallen player’s heart.
Conclusion

As I mentioned earlier, the battle of Black Ops 4 vs Cold War is extremely one-sided. If you want to know which is the better game, we can say with ease that it’s Black Ops Cold War.
However, we must give Black Ops 4 credit, because it’s definitely due some. This game was the first to ditch a campaign entirely. It released at a point in time when gamers were eager for more Call of Duty multiplayer, so that’s what the developers focused on.
While it was obviously a bad move, since campaigns returned to the franchise with the next release, Modern Warfare, the game did start something that the community has fallen in love with.
Blackout, that first iteration of Call of Duty battle royale, has turned into its own game. There’s no denying that Warzone is an incredible free-to-play experience. It’s the Call of Duty multiplayer experience that all fans have been dying for.
Whilst Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War may be the superior game of the two, it wouldn’t be anything without Black Ops 4. All the greatest moments in gaming history have had the way paved for them by a number of other small games. Sometimes even just game modes.
Black Ops 4 will forever be the game that made Call of Duty: Warzone a profitable possibility. Black Ops Cold War may not be remembered for anything.
